Grocers opt to pull Rocky Ford cantaloupe from hundreds of stores,King Soopers​, Safeway and Whole Foods markets are voluntarily pulling Rocky Ford cantaloupe from their shelves today in response to the first ever reported listeria outbreak in melons.

Yesterday the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment released a statement advising those at high-risk of contracting listeria — the elderly, pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems — not to eat Rocky Ford-grown cantaloupe. No formal recall has been issued. The cause and source of the outbreak is still under investigation. In all 12 confirmed cases linked to the outbreak, those affected said they ate cantaloupe.

King Soopers and City Market stores in Colorado are in the process of pulling the fruit from 142 stores, spokeswoman Kelli McGannon said.

"Rocky Ford cantaloupe is a customer favorite because it is Colorado grown," she said.

She did not know how much of the fruit has been sold.

The Denver division for Safeway stores is also voluntarily removing the fruit from their stores in Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, South Dakota and New Mexico.

"We have put out an alert to all of our stores and the plan is to get it off the shelves as quickly as possible," Safeway spokeswoman Kris Staaf said. Safeway has 138 stores in the region, with 118 of those in Colorado. Stores will also issue a refund for any cantaloupes purchased.An outbreak of listeriosis, an illness caused by the food-borne pathogen listeria, has killed at least four and sickened people across four states.
